Camp Opens in Two Weeks. Eleven Players Won't Be There.
The Panthers built their offseason around a specific idea: veteran, physical, hard to play against. Brady Tkachuk up front, Garnet Hathaway adding muscle, Jacob Markstrom in net. It was a coherent plan. Right now, eleven core contributors are sidelined, and Markstrom — the centerpiece of the goaltending overhaul — is among them.
Marchand's situation I noted two weeks ago. Surgery confirmed, timeline still open. He led this team with 47 points in 42 games last season, and there is no clean replacement for that production. The broader injury list compounds it: this isn't one or two guys nicked up before camp, it's a wave that started in late June and kept growing.
The front office did take some precautions. Akira Schmid was extended through 2028, and Mikulas Hovorka was added on a two-way deal, so there is goaltending depth behind Markstrom. But depth is not the same as readiness, and a team that went 40-42 last year — finishing 12-18 over its final 30 games — does not have margin to absorb a broken training camp on top of everything else.
Two weeks is a short runway. Some of these players may return in time. Some won't. The offseason moves were real, but right now the Panthers are betting that health arrives before the puck drops.
