Camp Opens in a Week and the Flyers Still Can't Get Healthy
Ty Murchison is the only forward officially listed as out in the current injury report, but the beat narrative here hasn't changed: Noah Cates and Owen Tippett remain unavailable heading into the final week before training camp. That's three forwards who contributed meaningful minutes last season, all sidelined at the worst possible moment for a team that was already thin up front.
The timing matters because of what those players represented in the late-season push. The Flyers averaged 3.6 goals per game over their final ten regular-season games — a genuine offensive acceleration that beat Pittsburgh in the first round. That surge wasn't built on Zegras and Konecny alone. Cates finished at plus-13, one of the better plus-minus marks on the roster. Tippett logged 30 points in 50 games. Depth forwards carrying their weight is part of how that run happened.
Right wing is the position most exposed. With Tippett out and Michkov's contract situation still unresolved as of late July, Travis Konecny is essentially the only reliable name at the position heading into camp. That's a thin ledge to stand on, and it was already a concern before the injury cluster.
My read: if Cates and Tippett aren't cleared in the next few days, the Flyers open camp with a forward group that looks noticeably different from the one that closed last season strong. That gap doesn't fix itself on its own.
