Camp Is Open. The Chair Is Not Filled.
Training camp is underway in San Antonio, and the Spurs still have not named a replacement for Charlie Stevens. Stevens left for the UConn general manager job weeks ago, and the search has produced nothing public — no name floated, no timeline offered, no indication the organization is close.
I've been noting this gap since late August, and the honest update is that there is no update. The roster work is largely done: Wembanyama is locked in, the backcourt is set, Tobias Harris is here to steady the fourth quarter. The on-court pieces the front office spent the summer assembling are now in the gym together. The personnel infrastructure behind the scenes remains one voice short.
It matters more in October than it did in July. Camp is when the scouting staff starts building the reports that shape in-season decisions — waiver claims, two-way callups, the kind of depth moves that become urgent around January. Taelon Peter is on the training camp roster. Jayden Quaintance has no return timeline. There will be decisions to make, and the grassroots scouting chair will still be empty when they arrive unless something changes soon.
