Burrow leans on Gesicki and Sample now. That's the tight end room.
Tanner Hudson landed on injured reserve, and that's where this story ended. I wrote about it when the news broke, and again when the shape of it became clearer — Hudson was the nominal starter, Gesicki was the one actually producing, and Sample was the depth. Now Hudson is gone for the year, and the room is exactly two functional players.
Gesicki caught 28 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games. Sample contributed 15 catches for 106 yards and a score across 12 appearances. Neither number is alarming on its own. Together, they represent the entirety of what Burrow has at the position for however many weeks remain. There is no third option with meaningful snaps behind them.
The timing compounds things. The receiver room has been battered — Chase back from the concussion protocol, Higgins active but recently limited — and the tight end spot was supposed to provide some stability in the middle of the field when the outside options thinned. It still can, in a limited way. Gesicki is a real player. Sample is a serviceable complement. But there's no margin left if either gets nicked.
