Burrow is out. Now we find out if the defense is real.
Joe Burrow's back kept him out of Sunday's game in Houston, and Joe Flacco took the snaps. That part was already filed — I wrote Monday about what the start meant structurally. What's worth noting now is that the Bengals had a reasonable setup: Nico Collins was out for Houston, the offensive weapons were available, and Flacco is a credentialed backup who earned his spot on the 2026 All-Backup Team for a reason.
The more interesting question was always on the other side of the ball. Cincinnati spent the offseason acquiring Dexter Lawrence and signing Bryan Cook specifically because the 2025 defense couldn't protect leads — a team that outscored its win total by roughly four and a half games doesn't have an offense problem, it has a conversion problem. Sunday was the first real look at whether Al Golden's group has changed that.
Flacco managing the game was always the floor. The ceiling was the defense holding up well enough that managing the game was sufficient. We'll see which version showed up.
