Burns Is Done for the Year. What's Left of the Rotation Isn't Pretty.
Chase Burns went on the 15-day IL, and with him went the only starter in Cincinnati's rotation who had earned the ball with any confidence. His line tells the story plainly: 16-5, 3.07 ERA, 10.8 strikeouts per nine over 167 innings. Everyone else in that rotation is pitching with an ERA north of 5.30.
What remains is Andrew Abbott, Brady Singer, Rhett Lowder, and Nick Lodolo — four starters who have combined to lose 51 games this season. The staff is allowing 7.2 runs per game over the last 10 contests, up a full run from the prior stretch. Hunter Greene is already gone for the year after Tommy John surgery in August, so there is no cavalry coming. The front office limited Burns's innings late in the season, which reads now as what it was: protecting an asset for 2027, not chasing October.
The Reds are 70-77 with 16 games left, 10.5 back of the last wild card. The math is not quite finished with them, but the rotation is. The next two weeks are going to be a long look at what this pitching staff is without its one reliable arm.
