Burnes Is Back on the IL. Arizona's Rotation Math Was Already Bad.
Corbin Burnes is on the 15-day IL with a shoulder issue, and the timing is about as clean as you'd expect from a team that has been managing a pitching emergency since June. Five other arms are already on the 60-day IL. The rotation that Arizona is running out there right now — Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandon Pfaadt, Michael Soroka, and then whatever comes next — is not a playoff rotation. It is a survival arrangement.
The Burnes situation stings specifically because his return from Tommy John surgery was supposed to be the thing that changed the calculus. For a stretch in early September it looked like it might. Then came three straight losses, then the current five-game winning streak, and now this. The shoulder going sideways is a reminder that a pitcher coming back from Tommy John is not a solved problem — he is a question mark who happened to be answering correctly for a few weeks.
What Arizona has left behind the top two is workable on paper and fragile in practice. Soroka (9-6, 3.71 ERA) has been the most reliable of the back-end options. Zac Gallen is at 3-9 with a 6.15 ERA and cannot be leaned on in close games. Ryne Nelson is available but has been inconsistent. With 38 games left and the team sitting in a playoff spot, the next 10 days are essentially a stress test of whether Rodriguez and Pfaadt can carry enough starts to keep the other arms from deciding anything important.
My read: the Burnes IL stint does not end Arizona's season, but it narrows the margin considerably. This team was already one bad Rodriguez start away from a rotation crisis. Now it is one bad Rodriguez start away from a rotation crisis with no safety net.
