Burden's lower-body injury is the first crack in the one part of camp that was going cleanly
Luther Burden III limped off the field Saturday after tangling with Tyrique Stevenson during practice, and while his status remains Active as of the latest update, the Bears don't have much cushion here. Burden caught 53 passes for 718 yards last season and was one of the offensive pieces the team had quietly checked off the list heading into camp — healthy, available, no drama. That list was already short enough.
The Bears have spent the better part of two weeks patching a defense that keeps springing new leaks, and through all of it the offense was the one thing that held. Darnell Wright locked in on a four-year, $116 million extension. Rome Odunze and Colston Loveland both cleared to full activity. Caleb Williams in camp and working. The receiving corps was intact. That was the story the team needed to be telling right now, and Burden walking off early Saturday complicated it.
The receiver depth behind the starters is thin enough that it was already a noted concern before this. There's a significant drop-off from the top of that depth chart to what follows, and Burden is not a luxury piece — he's a core part of how this offense distributes the ball. His Active designation is the right note to hold onto for now, but the Bears have learned this month that Active and healthy are not always the same thing.
