Buffalo Clinched a Playoff Spot. That's the Whole Story.
The Sabres are in. Fifty-one wins, fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, playoff spot secured — and they got there while losing three in a row and carrying Topias Leinonen and Jack Rathbone on injured reserve. A month ago I was writing about Zellweger in concussion protocol and Samuelsson listed week-to-week and the blue line looking genuinely threadbare. The team signed Grzelcyk, waived Sheary, and kept moving. The rebuild didn't collapse. It just kept going.
Tage Thompson is the reason any of this is possible. His 56 points in 50 games have been the constant through every personnel shuffle — trades, injuries, roster cuts, all of it. The secondary scoring filled in around him well enough: McLeod, Doan, and Quinn each contributed, and Josh Norris, when available, has been excellent. The blue line remains a real concern with Rasmus Dahlin carrying enormous minutes and a rough plus-minus behind him, but that's a problem for the playoff round, not the regular season ledger.
The Crevier extension on October 1 — four years, $16 million — is the organization betting on the process continuing to work. That's a reasonable bet right now. The 19–11 record over the last 30 games says this team is competitive, not lucky. Three-game losing streaks happen. Clinching doesn't.
