Browns Land Jared Verse and Call It a Defensive Line Reset. Maliek Collins Is Still Out.
The Clowney pursuit ended August 2 when he went back to Houston, and within days the Browns had pivoted to something more interesting. Jared Verse, ranked 35th on the NFL's Top 100 by his peers, is now in Cleveland — acquired after the Myles Garrett trade reshaped what this roster could look like at defensive end. Verse arrived with some noise attached: "I'm ready to see the look on everybody's face." That's the kind of entrance the organization needed after a 5-12 season in which the defensive line was a recurring problem.
The front office has been layering in pieces all camp. Travis Bell came in August 3 to shore up the interior. Tyler Hall added cornerback depth a day later. Verse is the most prominent addition of the group, and the peers' ranking suggests he's a legitimate contributor, not just a name. Whether he's a Garrett replacement in production is a separate question — he's said himself he's not here to fill those shoes.
The part that hasn't changed: Maliek Collins remains Out. He's the team's primary defensive tackle, and there's still no timeline. The depth behind him didn't meaningfully exist in 2025, and Travis Bell is a camp addition, not a proven answer. Verse helps the edge, but the interior is still the softest spot on this defense entering the season.
The Verse acquisition is the most aggressive move Berry has made on the defensive line this offseason. It's a real signal. The Collins situation is still the real problem.
