Browns Have Signed Three Defensive Linemen in Five Days. The Rotation Still Depends on Maliek Collins.
Patrick Jenkins arrived Friday, the third defensive tackle or end Cleveland has added since August 3. Travis Bell came first, then Jared Verse — ranked 35th on the NFL's Top 100 by his peers — and now Jenkins. Five days, three signings, all at the same position. After the Clowney pursuit ended with him returning to Houston, Andrew Berry didn't slow down; he widened the net.
The context is straightforward. Last season, the Browns ran one defensive tackle who played meaningful snaps. One. Collins handled everything, and when the defense collapsed across 17 games, there was nothing behind him to lean on. Collins is still out with a knee injury heading into camp, which means the rotation Berry just assembled isn't depth insurance — it's the starting point for how this team plans to function until Collins is cleared.
Verse is the headliner of the group, and he's said the right things about not trying to replace Myles Garrett, just being himself. Bell brings recent UFL experience. Jenkins adds another body after Friday's practice. Whether any of them hold up as a genuine rotation piece is a camp question, not an offseason one.
The need here was real and documented. The moves have been real and sustained. What hasn't changed yet is Collins's status — and until it does, everything else is prologue.
