Brown Jr. Exits Camp Without Contact Clearance, Adding to Brooklyn's Forward Crunch
Mikel Brown Jr. has returned to limited practice on his left ankle but remains unavailable for contact, with no timetable set for full clearance. For a rookie, missing live reps at the end of training camp is simply lost time — development that doesn't come back.
The timing is awkward because Brooklyn's forward depth was already thin before camp opened. Ziaire Williams is in Los Angeles now, Jayden Quaintance had knee surgery with no return date, and the Nets are counting on Julius Randle and a group of younger forwards to fill a gap that last season swallowed the roster whole. Brown Jr. was never going to be a rotation piece out of the gate, but every body matters when the depth chart has this many question marks.
The Nets' plan at the position is still workable — Randle is healthy, Danny Wolf logged real minutes last season, and Josh Minott is on a multiyear deal the front office clearly believes in. But Brooklyn went 20-62 last year in part because they ran out of complementary contributors when it mattered. A rookie sitting out contact work as the regular season approaches is a small thing that fits a familiar pattern.
