Brissett's Deal Is Done. Now the Hard Part.

Jacoby Brissett signed his one-year, $15.5 million deal on July 26, and by all accounts he showed up to the Cardinals facility ready to work. That part is settled. Everything else is not.

The quarterback situation is the least of Arizona's problems, which is a strange sentence to type about a team that lost Kyler Murray to injury after five games last season. But the roster holes underneath Brissett are genuinely alarming. The wide receiver position is thin by any measure — only two receivers logged meaningful snaps in 2025, and the nominal starter at the position produced at a fraction of what a functioning NFL starter should. James Conner is 31, listed as questionable, and has no real depth behind him at running back. Isaiah Oliver is the only cornerback who played last season with any regularity. Josh Sweat is on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury, and the drop-off to his backup at defensive end is steep. The list goes on.

What makes all of this harder is the front-office noise surrounding it. Personnel executive Ryan Gold remains suspended for the gambling violation, his appeal unresolved, and that distraction sits directly on top of a draft and roster-building process Arizona cannot afford to mishandle. The Brissett signing is a clean, uncomplicated piece of business in an offseason that has had very few of those.

The Hall of Fame Game against Carolina is coming up fast. Brissett is in the building and focused. My read is that the next few weeks of camp will tell us whether Jonathan Gannon has any real answers at receiver and running back, or whether Arizona is simply hoping the execution failures that cost them roughly five wins last season somehow fix themselves. They won't.
