Brewers Swap Depth for Depth, and That's About Right
Milwaukee sent outfielder Blake Perkins and reliever Craig Yoho to Cleveland on Saturday, getting back catcher Bo Naylor and pitcher Codi Heuer. Both Naylor and Heuer were assigned to Triple-A Nashville. Nobody headlining a playoff push came back; nobody irreplaceable went out.
The timing is worth noting. The Brewers are 63–39 and sitting on the NL's top seed, but they've lost three straight and are allowing runs at a pace that would have been unrecognizable a month ago. With nine players on the injured list — Woodruff, Harrison, and four others on the 60-day — the organization is in a different kind of roster management mode than it was when it was adding arms. This trade doesn't fix anything. It tidies the edges.
Perkins had been a depth piece across the outfield, appearing in the CF and LF mix behind starters who are holding their own. Yoho was a reliever in a bullpen that is already being stretched thin by rotation injuries. Trading them for organizational depth at catcher and in the pen suggests the front office is comfortable enough with the current 40-man construction that it can afford to move pieces around without urgency. That's a reasonable read of a team still holding a comfortable lead with 60 games left.
