Bregman Is Back. Seven Games to Find Out If It Matters.
The facial fracture designation is gone. Alex Bregman is back in the lineup with a week left in the regular season, and for a Cubs offense that has been scoring at a rate that would embarrass a .500 team, his return is the most significant roster development of the final stretch.
The numbers behind that claim are straightforward. Bregman is hitting .301/.376/.520 on the year, with 13 home runs and 38 RBI in 65 games — by a distance the most complete offensive profile in this lineup outside of Pete Crow-Armstrong. The Cubs have been scoring 4.1 runs per game over their last 10, down sharply from where they were a month ago. That is a lineup that needed help, and Bregman at third base is the clearest available source of it.
What the Cubs get back is not just a bat but a presence in the middle of the order that forces pitchers to work differently. Whether Bregman is fully himself after a facial fracture — whether the timing is there, whether he's protecting the plate the same way — is something seven games will tell us more honestly than any pregame availability report. My read is that even a 75-percent Bregman improves this lineup. The bar is low enough right now that it has to.
