Bradley and Smith Get Locked In as Toronto Fills Out Its Depth
The Raptors made a pair of roster moves official Monday, converting Jaden Bradley's two-way deal into a multiyear contract and locking Malachi Smith into a two-way agreement. Neither move reshapes the roster the way the Kawhi Leonard trade did, but both say something about how the front office is thinking about the next few years.
Bradley, a second-round rookie out of Arizona, came in without much job security on a standard two-way. Converting that to a multiyear deal before he's played a regular-season minute is a real show of faith. Smith, who came in on a training camp deal in August, gets his own upgrade to a two-way contract — the former Net bringing perimeter shooting to a group that shed a lot of depth when Ingram and Mamukelashvili left.
The context here matters. This roster has real holes. Ingram's departure left a significant scoring void, and the secondary options around Barnes, Quickley, and Barrett are thinner than they were a year ago. Bradley and Smith aren't going to close that gap on their own. But the front office isn't just plugging bodies — they're making commitments, which is a different posture than the one-year-deal patchwork you see from teams that don't know what they're building toward.
The Raptors know what they're building toward. Leonard is the centerpiece, the extension talks are reportedly moving, and Rajakovic has his own multiyear deal. Locking in young depth pieces fits the same logic: this is a franchise trying to establish a foundation, not just survive a transition.
