Boutte Spoke. Here's What He Said, and What It Didn't Change.
Kayshon Boutte opened up about his trade from New England to Houston this week, and the fourth-year receiver sounded like a man who knows he has something to prove. That part is straightforward enough — he was sent here last month, he's listed as the top wideout on the depth chart, and Week 1 against Buffalo is days away.
What his words can't paper over is the gap between what this room is and what it was supposed to be. Jayden Higgins put up 50 catches, 623 yards, and six touchdowns last season as a second-year player still on an upward curve. That's the kind of young receiver you build around. He tore his ACL in a joint practice and is gone for the year. Tank Dell is on injured reserve. Jaylin Noel is listed as questionable. The room Houston planned to develop is not the room Houston is running out there Thursday.
Boutte is a legitimate NFL receiver getting a fresh start, and that's a real thing. But Houston didn't trade for him because the plan was working. He's here because the plan broke. There's a difference, and it matters when you're asking C.J. Stroud to carry an offense into a tough opener with a corps assembled on the fly over ten days in August.
