Both Starting Tackles Are Active, But the Chargers Still Don't Have Answers Up Front
Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater have cleared active status heading into camp, which is the floor-level good news. The concern, as I've been tracking since the left guard competition piece earlier this week, is that active doesn't mean ready — and for an offensive line that couldn't afford to lose ground this offseason, the uncertainty around the bookend tackles remains the loudest unresolved question on the roster.
The depth chart behind them is thin. Travis Burke and Alex Harkey are the next names at tackle, and neither has done anything in this camp to suggest the Chargers could absorb a significant absence from either starter without Herbert feeling it. The left guard competition — now a three-man situation with Trey Pipkins III in the mix — adds another layer of instability to a unit that needs the opposite.
Herbert ranked 39th on the NFL Top 100 this week, his highest placement in six years. That's a real thing. But a quarterback's ceiling is tied directly to what's in front of him, and right now what's in front of him is a line with two uncertain starters, an unsettled guard spot, and backups who haven't proven they can hold the wall. The Chargers built last season on close-game execution. That kind of football requires clean pockets and reliable run blocking. Neither is guaranteed right now.
