Both Quarterbacks Are Available. Atlanta Still Has to Pick One.
Tua Tagovailoa is active. Michael Penix Jr. is reportedly nearing full-practice clearance. For most of this training camp, Atlanta couldn't say either of those things at the same time — so this is, at minimum, progress.
The Falcons spent the better part of July and early August managing a situation where neither quarterback was fully available. Tagovailoa's back kept him out when camp opened, and Penix has been questionable throughout. Cooper Rush was signed. An undrafted rookie was taking first-team reps. The Week 1 decision felt theoretical because the roster wouldn't cooperate with a real one. Now it might have to.
What the decision actually looks like is still unclear. Tagovailoa holds the top spot on the depth chart, and Penix's nine-game audition last season — 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, three interceptions — gave the organization real data on what he can do with the first unit. The offense around whoever starts is loaded: Robinson, Pitts Sr., and London are all active. The question of who takes the first snap in Week 1 is now, finally, a football question rather than a medical one.
That's where things stand heading into the final stretch of the preseason. The Falcons have a decision to make, and for the first time all summer, they have enough people healthy to actually make it.
