Blankenship Questionable After London, and the Defensive Injury List Keeps Growing
Reed Blankenship came out of the London game with a concussion and is listed as questionable. It is one more name on a defensive injury ledger that has been running since Week 1.
The offseason plan was straightforward enough: lock in the defensive core, fix the close-game problems that cost Houston in the wild-card loss to New England, build from the back end forward. Will Anderson got his record extension. Henry To'oTo'o signed a two-year, $16 million deal. Jadeveon Clowney came back. The franchise committed more than $50 million to defensive continuity through 2027. Then To'oTo'o went on injured reserve with a shoulder injury nine days into the season, Kayden McDonald followed him with an ankle, and now Blankenship — third on the safety depth chart behind Derek Stingley and Jalen Pitre, who I noted was already out heading into London — is in the concussion protocol.
Blankenship's status for next week is genuinely uncertain; that's what the concussion protocol does, it sets its own timeline. What's not uncertain is the pattern. This defense has been asked to absorb losses at linebacker, defensive tackle, and now the secondary, and it has done so without the season falling apart — Houston's record reflects a team that has held together despite the attrition. But the margin keeps shrinking.
