Bills' receiver depth is thin enough to see through
Dante Pettis is a seven-year veteran, which sounds reassuring until you look at the depth chart. He's the second wideout on Buffalo's roster right now. Trent Sherfield is third. That's the room behind DJ Moore — a room that, as I've noted the past two days, has been losing bodies faster than it's adding them.
The sequence matters. Tyrell Shavers opened camp on the PUP list with a playoff injury. Jalen Virgil failed his physical and went to the NFI list. The Bills signed Pettis the same day Virgil went down. Two receivers lost, one veteran journeyman added. The net is still minus-one functional body, and the one they brought in has spent his career as a depth piece on other teams' rosters.
Moore himself is active and healthy, which is the good news. But Moore is also on an expiring contract, and behind him the production drop is severe — Pettis is operating at a fraction of what a legitimate second receiver should provide in this offense. Khalil Shakir (876 receiving yards last season) is the real second option, and the group leans heavily on that reality.
My read: this is a position that needs more work before September. The Bills have patched the leak twice in three days. The leak is still there.
