Bautista Is Still on the 60-Day IL. The Bullpen Has Managed Without Him.
Felix Bautista remains on the 60-day injured list, and there is no grounded news indicating a return is imminent. The angle here is the absence itself — what it means, and what the bullpen has done in the space he left.
What the pen has done is hold, more or less. Rico Garcia has been the steadying force: 9 saves, a 3.06 ERA, a WHIP under 1.00 across 76 appearances. That is a genuine workhorse season from a reliever who was never supposed to be the last man standing in high-leverage situations. Andrew Kittredge has handled closer duties ahead of him in the depth chart. The group has survived, which is different from thriving.
The problem shows up in the one-run games. Baltimore is 15-24 in those situations — a 38% win rate against a 48% overall mark. That gap is where the Bautista-shaped hole lives. A healthy Bautista, the kind who was one of the better high-leverage arms in the American League before the injury, does not guarantee those games flip. But he changes the calculus in the eighth inning in ways that Garcia and Kittredge simply have not.
With 15 games left and an elimination number of 9, Baltimore needs to win close games it has been losing all year. The bullpen has held the structure together; it has not solved the structural problem. Whether Bautista could have changed that is a question for the offseason. Right now, the pen goes into the final stretch with what it has built — which is functional, and probably not enough.
