Barzal Aggravates an Injury, and the Timeline Gets Longer
Mathew Barzal won't skate for two weeks after aggravating a previous injury, the team confirmed Wednesday. He led the Islanders with 42 points in 50 games last season, and he's now the most prominent name on a list that still includes Pierre Engvall, Kyle Palmieri, Ryan Pulock, Alexander Romanov, and Semyon Varlamov. Six players, no meaningful return dates.
I've noted twice this month that the list hadn't changed. Now it has — just not in the direction anyone wanted. Two weeks off skates for Barzal means he's almost certainly not a factor when camp gets serious, and depending on how the aggravation responds, the math on his availability for opening night gets uncomfortable fast.
The structural problem here isn't new. Last season the Islanders leaned on Barzal as their offensive anchor, and when the secondary scoring dried up in April, the whole thing came apart — three wins in the final ten games, scoring down nearly a full goal per game from where it had been. Losing him for even a portion of the early season puts that same weight back on a group that already proved it couldn't carry it.
The front office has spent the offseason building infrastructure — executive hires, prospect development, depth signings — but none of that addresses what happens in October if Barzal isn't ready. That's the next ten days in miniature: wait, monitor, and hope the aggravation is minor enough that "two weeks" doesn't quietly become six.
