Barkley is Questionable, and Tank Bigsby is next in line for a job he hasn't auditioned for yet
Saquon Barkley is listed Questionable heading into Week 2, which means the Eagles are now staring at a backfield depth chart that was never built to carry a full game. Tank Bigsby is first up behind him, with Will Shipley behind that. Neither has been asked to shoulder a featured role in Philadelphia's offense, and nothing in the preseason suggested the team was preparing for that scenario.
The timing is rough. Barkley ran for 1,246 yards last season and was the connective tissue between Hurts' scramble threat and the play-action game that kept defenses honest. Lose that, and the offense doesn't just lose production — it loses a dimension. Hurts can manufacture yards on his own, but a ground game running through Bigsby and Shipley is a different animal than one anchored by Barkley, and opposing coordinators will adjust accordingly.
What makes this harder is the context around it. Landon Dickerson is already on injured reserve. Jalen Carter played through a wrist injury in Week 2. The Eagles have been absorbing hits across the roster for weeks now, and each one has narrowed the margin a little further. Barkley being Questionable is one more thing going sideways at the wrong time, and the backfield contingency — Bigsby, then Shipley, then Carson Steele — is thin enough that there isn't a clean answer if this lingers.
