Badie Is Running, and Cody Schrader Is the Entire Contingency Plan
Tyler Badie is active, and he is carrying this backfield into what is now a third straight week. The grounding reality here is straightforward: Dobbins is out, Harvey is out, and the depth chart behind Badie lists Cody Schrader as the next man up. Schrader has not logged meaningful snaps this season. That is the contingency.
Badie's profile last season was a receiver's profile — 20 catches, 148 yards, no touchdowns in 18 games. He was built to run routes out of the backfield, not to absorb a full carry load for a contending offense. Denver is asking him to be something he was not designed to be, and the roster offers no correction if that arrangement breaks down.
The depth chart flagged this before the season started. There was no quality depth behind Dobbins entering the year, and the offseason did not fix it. Jonah Coleman went to injured reserve. Jaleel McLaughlin, who was in the mix this summer, signed elsewhere. What remains is Badie and Schrader, and one of them has played meaningful football this year.
My read is that Denver can survive a week or two of this if Nix is managing the game efficiently and the defense holds. But a third week of Badie as the lead back, with nothing behind him, is where the preseason depth warnings stop being abstract. The Broncos knew this room was thin. They are finding out now what thin actually costs.
