Athletics hire Taylor Smith as President of Baseball Operations
The Athletics have hired Taylor Smith as President of Baseball Operations, completing a front-office restructuring that began when GM David Forst and the organization parted ways ahead of the franchise's move to Las Vegas. The search ran through mid-September before landing on Smith.
Oakland enters the offseason at 46-71, last in the AL West and long since eliminated from playoff contention. The on-field results this year — a seven-game losing streak to close out, a 9-21 record over the last 30 games, ten players on the 60-day IL — make the scope of the rebuild plain. Smith inherits a roster with genuine young pieces: Shea Langeliers (.307, 21 HR, 1.003 OPS in 68 games), Henry Bolte (.337, .912 OPS in 29 games), and Tommy White (.382, 1.241 OPS in 15 games) are among the names worth building around heading into 2027.
The front-office structure is now set. The work starts this offseason.
