At some point the injury list becomes the story
I've written this note three times now, and the underlying facts haven't changed enough to warrant a fourth version of the same sentence. So let me step back and say what the summer has actually told us: the Bulls rebuilt aggressively, and then watched a significant portion of that rebuilt roster spend July and early August in day-to-day designations. Giddey, Claxton, Wilson, Okoro, Jalen Smith — at various points, all of them were on the list. That's not a depth problem. That's the core.
The optimistic read is that summer league injuries are often precautionary, and teams manage load deliberately before training camp. Nothing in the current injury report flags anyone as seriously hurt. The less optimistic read is that this franchise finished 31–52 last season in part because it couldn't stay healthy or consistent — Giddey played 59 games, Vucevic 53, White just 30 — and the summer has done nothing to quiet that concern.
Training camp is the next real checkpoint. If Giddey and Claxton arrive healthy and the new pieces fit around White and Buzelis, the offseason looks like a genuine retool. If the designations linger, the question shifts from whether Chicago can compete to whether they can simply field the roster they built.
