Astros Trade for Varsho, Choosing Now Over Later
Houston sent Spencer Arrighetti to Toronto on Monday for center fielder Daulton Varsho, and the move tells you everything about where the front office thinks this team stands. Arrighetti went 7-6 with a 4.56 ERA in 20 starts this season and was already on the 15-day IL — a useful arm, but not an irreplaceable one. The Astros gave him up to patch an outfield that has been short-handed since Brice Matthews landed on the 10-day IL, and they did it while sitting 54-55, holding a playoff seed, and riding an 8-2 run over the last 10 games.
The calculus is straightforward: the rotation is already cannibalized. Mike Burrows is also on the 15-day IL, Brandon Walter is on the 60-day, and the depth behind Peter Lambert — who has been the staff's steadiest starter — is thin. Giving up Arrighetti doesn't make that situation meaningfully worse. What it does is give the outfield a legitimate option at a position that had become a liability.
The risk the front office is accepting is real. Bryan King has been a disaster in recent appearances, and one bad week from the bullpen can erase a hot streak in a hurry. Josh Hader's 0.82 ERA over 22 games has been the staff's only elite anchor, and that's a narrow margin. But with 53 games left and a playoff spot in hand, the front office apparently decided that standing pat while the outfield leaked runs was the worse option. Varsho is in the building. The window is open, at least for now.
