Another Forward Down in Washington
The Flyers dropped their preseason opener to the Capitals in a blowout and came home with one fewer healthy forward than they brought. The injury, reported September 22, adds another name to a list that has been growing since July. Grebenkin is already out. Michkov has been working his way back. Cates and Tippett only recently cleared the day-to-day threshold. The forward group was already thin when the bus left for Washington; it's thinner now.
The timing is lousy in a specific way. Philadelphia made 15 roster cuts three days before this game, which means the cushion that training camp depth provides is already gone. Whoever got hurt in that blowout was presumably someone the coaching staff was counting on — the headline called him a "surging forward," which suggests he was making a case for himself. Now that case is on hold.
The right wing situation was already the team's most pressing positional concern heading into the season. Cole Knuble is the clear top option there; after him, the drop-off is steep. Adding an injury to that mix before the regular season begins doesn't change the structural problem — it just makes it harder to paper over.
The preseason loss itself doesn't matter. What matters is the Flyers are now navigating their forward depth chart with even less margin than they had last week, and last week wasn't comfortable.
