Angels trade O'Hoppe and Silseth to Texas, and the sell-off has begun
The Angels sent catcher Logan O'Hoppe and reliever Chase Silseth to the Rangers on Wednesday for minor league third baseman Ange Arredondo. That's the deal. At 37-49 and six games back of the final wild card, John Mozeliak's front office made the call that the window isn't cracked — it's closed.
O'Hoppe was the team's starting catcher and the top name on a depth chart that had already been thinned by injury. Silseth heads to a division rival as well, which is the kind of thing that stings a little extra. What comes back is a minor leaguer at third base — organizational depth, not a win-now piece. That's the language of a rebuild, not a retool.
The timing is worth noting. This is a team still carrying nine players on the injured list, still asking Ryan Johnson to eat innings at a pace that isn't sustainable, still watching a 37-year-old Mike Trout — the only All-Star on the roster — hold the lineup together at 71 games in. Moving O'Hoppe doesn't fix any of that. It just acknowledges the math.
Whether more moves follow before the deadline closes is the only real question left. The sell-off, as one headline put it, appears to be starting.
