Andy Green hired as Mets manager with eight games left in a lost season
The Mets have hired Andy Green as their next manager, turning the page on a season that ended in practical terms weeks ago. Carlos Mendoza was fired earlier this summer, and the club has been operating under interim leadership since. Green, who previously managed the Padres for parts of four seasons, brings major-league managerial experience to a franchise looking for steadiness heading into the offseason.
The timing is notable. New York finishes 2026 at 71–83, fifth in the NL East and well out of wild-card contention, with eight games remaining. The roster has been ravaged by injuries all year — eight players currently on the IL, including long-term absences for Tylor Megill, Reed Garrett, and Jorge Polanco — and the front office has had months to assess what a rebuild requires. Bringing in a permanent manager this early in the offseason process suggests the organization wants its new voice in the room before roster decisions are made, not after.
Green inherits a roster with some real pieces. Nolan McLean has been a workable top-of-rotation arm, Christian Scott has shown strikeout upside, and Juan Soto — when healthy — is the team's lone All-Star and its most dangerous hitter. The work ahead is substantial, but the hire at least closes the chapter on a managerial vacancy that has hung over the club since late June.
