Allen's Suspension Is Confirmed. Now the Colts Count What's Left.
The league made it official: Keenan Allen is suspended. What was a legal contingency when I wrote about the charges going formal on Thursday is now a roster fact. The receiving room that Indianapolis spent $8.32 million to stabilize has a hole in it before the season has found its footing.
The arithmetic isn't complicated. Alec Pierce is active after his ankle surgery and logged 1,003 yards and 6 touchdowns last season, so the top of the depth chart holds. But the reason Allen was brought in was precisely because the room needed a second credible option — a veteran who could win contested catches and take pressure off Pierce on the weeks when the ankle flares or the coverage rolls his way. That need didn't disappear; it just went unaddressed again.
What's left at receiver behind Pierce is Josh Downs, Anthony Gould, and Deion Burks by depth chart. Downs had a productive 2025 and is a real piece. The others are unproven at meaningful volume. The Colts built this offseason around not having to rely on that group as the primary answer, and now they may have to.
The suspension is the story today, but the structural problem underneath it has been here since August 30. Indianapolis bet on Allen stabilizing something fragile. That bet didn't pay. My read is the next two weeks will tell us whether this offense can function without the veteran depth it thought it had secured — or whether it's back to leaning on Taylor and hoping the passing game holds together on its own.
