Allen Is Here. Pierce Isn't. That's the Opener in One Line.

Indianapolis has a legitimate receiving room now — on paper, and eventually in practice. Keenan Allen signed, called it an easy decision, and slotted into a group that already includes Michael Pittman Jr. (80 receptions, 784 yards, 7 touchdowns last season) and Josh Downs. That's real depth. The kind the Colts didn't have when they were scrambling through the back half of 2025.

The problem is Alec Pierce, who is listed out and has been since the ankle surgery he said was unavoidable. Pierce led this team in receiving yards last season — 1,003 of them in 15 games — and right now he's not practicing. Allen was signed, at least in part, to cover that absence. Whether he can do that in Week 1, against a live defense, after joining the offense this late in camp, is the actual question the opener will answer.

My read is that Allen buys the Colts something real even if Pierce misses the first game or two — a veteran who has run every route in the book and doesn't need many reps to find his footing. But "the receiving room is deep enough to compete" and "the receiving room is ready for Week 1 without its leading receiver" are two different statements. The first one is true. The second one we'll find out shortly.
