Akhtyamov Heads Back to the Marlies After a Three-Day Stay
Artur Akhtyamov was recalled from the AHL on October 19, stuck around for three days, and was sent back down on October 22. That's the whole transaction. Coach Jim Hiller had explained the call-up publicly at the time — the Leafs were managing their goaltending situation heading into the Sharks game — and now that the immediate need has passed, Akhtyamov is back in the minors getting regular work.
The depth chart at goal currently lists Sergei Bobrovsky, Anthony Stolarz, and Samuel Hlavaj, which is a reasonably stocked group on paper. Elvis Merzlikins remains on injured reserve, so the organizational picture behind that top three is thinner than it looks. Akhtyamov's brief window on the NHL roster was essentially a precautionary measure, not a sign that anything above him had cracked.
Nothing here demands a larger read. A young goalie got recalled, wasn't needed, went back down. The more pressing questions for Toronto right now sit elsewhere — the blue line, John Tavares's week-to-week timeline, Jake McCabe's face. The crease, at least for the moment, is not the loudest problem on the roster.
