Adams Is Done for at Least Six Weeks, and the Passing Game Just Got a Lot Thinner
Davante Adams has a ruptured hamstring and is out six to ten weeks. That's the second star receiver this team has lost to a significant injury, and it lands at the worst possible time on the schedule.
The math here is straightforward and not good. Adams caught 15 touchdowns this season — no other receiver on this roster is close to that. Puka Nacua carries the passing attack, but even Nacua can't absorb what Adams was doing in the red zone. Behind those two, the depth chart runs through Jordan Whittington, Xavier Smith, and Tutu Atwell, none of whom have been asked to do what Adams was doing on a weekly basis. Colby Parkinson and the tight end room will see more targets; Kyren Williams out of the backfield will too. McVay will find ways to scheme around it. But 15 touchdowns don't just redistribute.
I noted yesterday that the Rams had problems stacking up on both sides of the ball. This sharpens that considerably. The defensive side has been gutted by injury since Garrett went to IR. Now the offense has its own version of the same problem. A team that already struggled to close out tight games last season is going to be asked to do it with a thinner roster than it had in September.
Six to ten weeks means Adams is a best-case late-season return, worst-case gone for the year. The Rams don't have the margin to absorb that quietly.
