A Running Back Added, a Quarterback Closer. Cleveland Is Building Again.
Two moves mid-week, neither dramatic on its own, but together they carry a different feel than what this roster has been doing since August. The Browns added depth at running back and kept Gabriel's 21-day practice window ticking — the kind of quiet, forward-looking activity that has been rare around here since the Garrett trade turned everything reactive.
Gabriel remains on injured reserve, and the window does not guarantee he suits up. But the clock is running, and having a third quarterback with actual upside behind Watson matters for a room that currently has no viable backup with meaningful snaps. I wrote about the window when it opened; nothing has changed procedurally, but pairing it with a running back addition in the same week suggests the front office is at least trying to look ahead rather than just patch what broke yesterday.
The running back depth chart — Jaret Patterson, Benny LeMay, Jaleel McLaughlin — has been thin enough that any addition there is worth noting. The bigger holes remain at wide receiver and along the defensive line, and those are not getting fixed mid-week. But two constructive moves in the same week is a change of pace for a team that spent most of September in pure damage-control mode. Small, but different.
