A.J. Brown on IR, and New England's Receiver Depth Gets Its First Real Test
A.J. Brown is on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain suffered in the Week 1 loss to Seattle, and the Patriots are now without their marquee offseason addition for at least the next four weeks. Brown came over from Philadelphia this summer with considerable fanfare — he was openly excited about the move, and the fit with Drake Maye looked like one of the more interesting new partnerships in the AFC. That partnership is on hold before it really started.
The good news is that New England has functional options around him. Stefon Diggs led this receiving corps through all of last season, Kayshon Boutte took a real step forward, and Mack Hollins provides a reliable underneath presence. DeMario Douglas is active and on the depth chart. The group is not bare. But Brown was supposed to be the piece that pushed this offense from very good to genuinely hard to scheme against, and none of those names replaces what he brings as a contested-catch, after-the-catch threat on the outside.
The other thing worth noting: this is the same Seattle team that beat New England in the Super Bowl, and the Patriots are now 0-1 against them again with their new weapon already sidelined. The next four weeks will tell us something about how this offense holds up when the margin for error shrinks. Last season, New England was 70% in close games against an 82% overall mark — the clutch gap was real even when everything was healthy. Maye is active and capable of carrying a lot, but the cushion just got thinner.
