Thompson's 10th Breaks Tie, Buffalo Escapes LA With 3-2 Win
Tage Thompson scored his 10th goal of the season at 13:40 of the third period to lift Buffalo past Los Angeles 3-2 on Halloween night. The Sabres needed every bit of it after squandering a two-goal lead and watching LA claw all the way back to even in the opening minute of the third.
Buffalo came out with purpose. Jack Quinn opened the scoring at 6:35 of the first — a snap shot, his eighth of the year, set up by Zach Benson and Rasmus Dahlin — and that first goal proved to be the margin-shifting moment of the game. The Sabres carried a 1-0 lead into the second and extended it when Thompson snapped home his ninth at 15:38, Benson picking up his second assist of the night alongside Mattias Samuelsson. At that point, Buffalo looked firmly in control.
Then Los Angeles remembered it was playing hockey. Corey Perry deflected one past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at 17:24 of the second to make it 2-1, and the Kings carried that momentum into the third. Just 89 seconds into the final frame, Andre Lee tipped home his first NHL goal to tie it at two. What had been a comfortable Sabres lead was suddenly gone, and the building — what appears to have been a loud one for LA — had every reason to believe the Kings could steal this. Luukkonen finished with 27 saves on 29 shots, and it looks like he kept Buffalo alive during that stretch when the game flipped.
Thompson had other ideas. At 13:40 of the third, he snapped home his 10th of the season — assisted by Quinn and Dahlin — and that was the game. The story of the night was really Buffalo's top unit operating as a connected machine: Dahlin finished with two assists, Benson had two assists, and Quinn contributed a goal and an assist, all of them weaving in and out of each other's scoring plays across all three periods. On the other end, Anton Forsberg made 28 saves on 31 shots for LA in a losing effort — a respectable performance that kept the Kings in it long enough to make things genuinely uncomfortable. Buffalo gets the two points, but this one was far messier than the final score suggests.
