Holmberg's Insurance Goal Survives WPG's Wild Third-Period Charge
Tampa Bay built a 5-1 lead, watched Winnipeg claw all the way back to 5-4, then needed a Pontus Holmberg snap shot at 18:29 of the third to finally put it away, 6-4. Holmberg finished with 1G 3A — four points — and was the connective tissue on every meaningful Tampa Bay sequence of the night.
The game's tone was set just 2:20 into the first period when Brayden Point wired a wrist shot past Stuart Skinner — assisted by Nikita Kucherov and Jake Guentzel — to put Tampa Bay up 1-0. That opening goal proved to be the turning point the Lightning never relinquished, shifting the score margin from even to +1 in their favor before the building had settled in. Winnipeg answered late in the first when Neal Pionk ripped a slap shot at 17:45, assisted by Cole Perfetti and Mark Scheifele, to tie it 1-1. That would be the last moment of parity all night.
The second period is where Tampa Bay buried Winnipeg — or so it appeared. Conor Geekie restored the lead at 9:43 on a backhand, then the Lightning went on a three-goal run in under four minutes of game time. Anthony Cirelli deflected one home at 15:56, John Carlson snapped one in at 18:07, and Brandon Hagel added another at 19:03 — all three assisted at least once by Holmberg, who was everywhere. By the end of the second, it was 5-1 Tampa Bay, and Skinner had been pulled in favor of Nico Daws, who stopped all 9 shots he faced the rest of the way.
What looked like a comfortable win turned into something far more nerve-wracking. Dylan Samberg deflected one in at 7:00 of the third, Pionk scored his second of the night at 8:50, and Kyle Connor — now at 10 goals on the season — wired a wrist shot at 17:12 to make it 5-4. Three goals in under eleven minutes, and suddenly Andrei Vasilevskiy, who finished with 17 saves on 21 shots, was staring down a tied game. It appears Winnipeg's third-period push was as genuine a comeback threat as the score suggests — three unanswered goals with momentum clearly on their side. But Holmberg answered at 18:29, assisted by Cirelli and Hagel, to restore the two-goal cushion and seal it. Tampa Bay's top performers — Holmberg (4 pts), Cirelli (3 pts), and Hagel (3 pts) — look like a line that fed off each other all night, combining for 10 of the team's points. Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele picked up three assists and Kyle Connor's goal was his tenth of the year, but it wasn't enough to complete what would have been a stunning comeback.
