Hurricanes Erupt for Six, Blow Past Canucks in Third
Carolina needed a wild first period just to find its footing, then outscored Vancouver 4-0 in the third to walk away with a 6-3 win. Three Carolina skaters — Nikolaj Ehlers, Logan Stankoven, and Jackson Blake — each finished with three points, and Nicolas Deslauriers added two goals of his own.
The first period was a genuine mess, and the good kind if you were a neutral. Stankoven opened the scoring at 4:44 on a wrist shot, Blake and Juuso Valimaki picking up the assists. Vancouver answered at 10:10 through Linus Karlsson, then Carolina went back ahead at 12:09 when Ehlers converted off a Blake feed — Blake's second assist of the period. The Canucks refused to fold, and Jonathan Lekkerimaki knotted it at 2-2 with two seconds left in the first. Four goals, two ties, and a lot of hockey still to play.
The second period followed the same script. Deslauriers gave Carolina a 3-2 lead at 2:26, only for Max Sasson to level it again at 13:07, making it 3-3. Vancouver had now erased a Carolina lead three times, and it looked like this game could go anywhere. Leevi Merilainen was doing everything he could to keep the Canucks in it — he finished with 37 saves on 42 shots — but the story of the night was that Carolina's depth kept coming in waves that Vancouver simply couldn't absorb.
The third period belonged entirely to the Hurricanes. Deslauriers broke the tie for good at 4:07, his second of the night, and that appears to have been the moment Vancouver's resistance finally cracked. Ehlers made it 5-3 at 10:22 on an unassisted goal, and Stankoven closed it out at 17:57 — Ehlers and Blake combining for the assists — to complete a 4-0 Carolina third period and a 6-3 final. Pyotr Kochetkov was barely tested, stopping 14 of 17 shots. The Hurricanes' ability to generate 42 shots while keeping Vancouver to 17 looks like the real margin in this game — the score was close until it suddenly wasn't.
