Penix Carves Up SF, Atlanta Rolls 29-20
Michael Penix Jr. went 25-of-34 for 213 yards and three touchdowns as Atlanta handled San Francisco 29-20 on Sunday. The nine-point margin doesn't fully capture how controlled this one felt for the Falcons.
Penix was the story from start to finish. Three touchdown passes on 25 completions, with only nine incompletions all afternoon — that's a quarterback operating with real command, not just volume. Atlanta's offense looked like it had answers every time San Francisco threatened to make it a game. Drake London hauled in 7 catches for 66 yards and a score, giving Penix a reliable target who consistently moved the chains. Bijan Robinson did the dirty work on the ground — 20 carries for 63 yards and 5 receptions for 59 more — and while he didn't find the end zone, his presence appears to have kept Atlanta's offense balanced and the San Francisco defense honest all day.
Brock Purdy was not the problem for the 49ers. He finished 27-of-40 for 288 yards and a touchdown, which on most Sundays is a winning line. The issue, it looks like, was that San Francisco couldn't generate enough around him. Christian McCaffrey contributed 7 carries for 39 yards and a rushing touchdown, plus 6 catches for 61 yards — a workload that shows the 49ers leaned on him heavily. Kaelon Black added 12 carries for 63 yards and a score of his own, so the ground game wasn't invisible. But 20 points against an Atlanta defense that had Penix rolling on the other side was never going to be enough.
The final score — 29-20 — tells you Atlanta was in control without ever fully blowing the doors off. That's arguably more impressive. Penix didn't need to be reckless; he was precise. Three touchdowns on 34 attempts with that completion rate suggests Atlanta's passing game is maturing into something genuinely difficult to scheme against. For San Francisco, the afternoon raises real questions about whether the offense can generate points against a defense that doesn't give Purdy easy answers. He did his job. The margin says the team around him didn't do enough.
