Watson, Judkins Outscore Pollard's Three-TD Day in Cleveland's 27-24 Win
Tony Pollard ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns and Tennessee still lost. Cleveland took the 27-24 final on the strength of a complete offensive performance that Tennessee simply couldn't match when it mattered.
Pollard was the best player on the field — that much is not debatable. Twenty-five carries, 129 yards, three touchdowns, and another 26 yards receiving. That is a dominant individual performance by any measure. The problem for Tennessee is that Cam Ward gave them almost nothing through the air: 20 of 31 for 181 yards, zero touchdown passes. When your running back is doing that kind of work and your quarterback can't threaten a defense vertically, opposing coordinators can load the box and dare you to keep running. It looks like that's exactly what Cleveland did in the second half.
Deshaun Watson, meanwhile, operated with efficiency Cleveland fans have been waiting to see. He finished 25 of 36 for 308 yards and added a rushing touchdown on 19 yards across three carries. He didn't throw a touchdown through the air, which appears to be the one blemish on an otherwise clean afternoon — but the offense didn't need him to. KC Concepcion was a weapon all day: 8 receptions, 129 yards, doing the work of a true number-one option. Harold Fannin Jr. added 6 catches for 91 yards. That's two receivers combining for 220 yards, and Quinshon Judkins chipped in 96 yards and two scores on 17 carries. Cleveland moved the ball in every direction Tennessee tried to stop it.
The story of this game appears to be the mismatch at quarterback. Pollard kept Tennessee alive — three touchdowns is three touchdowns — but Ward's 181 passing yards weren't enough to sustain drives when Cleveland's defense forced Tennessee off schedule. Watson's 308-yard day against zero turnovers (none listed in the box score) looks like the kind of performance that wins close games on the road, and a 27-24 final is about as close as it gets. Cleveland takes the win. Tennessee walks away knowing their ground game is elite and their passing attack is a liability.
