Ty Jerome Drops 45, Memphis Pulls Away 123-103
Ty Jerome put up 45 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists to carry Memphis past Utah 123-103 on October 22. The story of the night was a one-man demolition job that Memphis rode from a first-quarter deficit all the way to a comfortable 20-point final margin.
The first quarter looked like it might belong to Utah. Keyonte George hit back-to-back 24-foot threes to push the Jazz ahead 13-9, and for a stretch Memphis looked like it was chasing. Then Jerome answered with a 24-foot three of his own at the 7:23 mark — the single biggest swing of the game, pushing Memphis's home win probability from 36% to 44% — and the tone shifted. Utah kept scoring, closing the quarter on a 17-7 run to lead 31-22, but Jerome refused to let Memphis fall apart, draining three free throws with 0.6 seconds left to trim it to 31-29 heading into the second.
The second quarter is where Memphis took control and never gave it back. Jerome opened with a layup to tie it at 31, Cameron Boozer converted two free throws to put Memphis ahead, and Jerome added a 2-foot bucket to make it 35-31. Utah briefly responded — Jaren Jackson Jr. hit a 23-foot three to pull within one — but Cedric Coward buried a 24-foot three off a Jerome assist to push it back to 38-34, and Zach Edey's tip-in dunk capped a sequence that put Memphis up 40-34. From that point, Utah never seriously threatened. The final was 123-103.
For Utah, the individual performances were real: Keyonte George finished with 22 points and 5 assists, Lauri Markkanen added 18 points and 9 rebounds, and Ace Bailey chipped in 12 points and 3 blocks. Jackson Jr. contributed 15 points and 2 blocks. On paper, that's a respectable output from four players. The problem, it appears, is that Jerome alone outscored all of them combined — 45 points against a Jazz rotation that had six players listed as DNP by coach's decision, including Taylor Hendricks, Josh Green, and Kris Murray. Whether those absences thinned Utah's defensive options is worth watching. Jerami Grant added 15 points and 3 assists in support for Memphis, but make no mistake: this was Jerome's night, start to finish, and Memphis looked every bit like a team that knows exactly what it has in him.
