Edwards Drops 45, Wolves Dismantle Miami 131-106
Anthony Edwards put up 45 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and a block as Minnesota routed Miami 131-106 on October 21. Giannis Antetokounmpo answered with 35 points for the Heat, but it wasn't close to enough.
The first quarter looked like it might be a fight. Giannis opened the scoring with a 16-foot pullup, then knocked in four free throws to push Miami to a 4-0 lead before Minnesota even got on the board. LaMelo Ball answered with a 27-footer, Edwards followed with a 26-foot three off a Ball assist, and just like that the Wolves were ahead 6-4. The lead traded hands repeatedly — Klay Thompson hit back-to-back 25-footers to keep Miami level at 11-11 and again at 17-17 — but Minnesota started to pull away in the final five minutes of the quarter. A McDaniels three, an Edwards fadeaway, a Dosunmu triple: the Wolves went on a run that stretched the lead to 34-28, and even a furious Giannis flurry — a dunk, a layup, and a buzzer two-pointer — only got Miami within 34-32 at the break.
The second quarter opened with Giannis completing the comeback, tying it at 34 with a running dunk, then nudging Miami ahead 35-34 on a free throw. That lead lasted about 90 seconds. McDaniels hit a pullup to put Minnesota back in front, Ball buried a step-back three, and the Wolves never looked back. Miami kept clawing — Bobby Portis twice cut the deficit to two — but Minnesota's depth was the story. The decisive moment came at P2 4:46, when Terrence Shannon Jr. drained a 23-foot three off an Ayo Dosunmu assist, swinging Miami's win probability from 53% to 46%. That seven-point swing was the crack in the dam, and Minnesota flooded through it on the way to a 131-106 final.
The supporting cast made this a statement. LaMelo Ball finished with 21 points and 6 assists, running the offense with precision. Jaden McDaniels was everywhere — 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals, looking like the kind of two-way pest that makes opponents miserable. Dosunmu chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists off the bench. For Miami, Giannis's 35 points were genuinely impressive, but the Heat got almost nothing else at scale — Bam Adebayo added 15 points and 7 rebounds, and that was largely it. The 25-point margin appears to reflect a Minnesota team that is deeper, sharper, and right now considerably more dangerous than what Miami can counter.
