Wacha Dominates, Jensen Crushes KC Past Cleveland 3-0
Michael Wacha threw 8.0 innings of four-hit, zero-walk ball with 10 strikeouts, and Carter Jensen's two-run shot in the ninth put the game away for good. Kansas City shut out Cleveland 3-0 on August 28, and the story of the night was a pitching performance that Cleveland's lineup simply had no answer for.
Wacha was the engine of this entire game. Eight innings, four hits, zero earned runs, zero walks, ten strikeouts — that's a line that doesn't leave much room for debate. Cleveland managed baserunners but never strung anything together against him, and the zero in the walk column looks like the detail that kept the Guardians from ever manufacturing a threat. Steven Cruz came on for the ninth and handled his inning cleanly, allowing two hits but striking out two and keeping the shutout intact. Kansas City's pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts against zero walks on the night.
Offensively, the Royals built their lead methodically. In the fifth, Salvador Perez grounded out to shortstop — not a glamorous play — but it scored Bobby Witt Jr. to put KC up 1-0. That's the kind of run that matters when your starter is dealing. Tanner Bibee held Kansas City to one run over six innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five, so the game felt tighter than it probably should have. Then the ninth arrived. With Cleveland's win probability sitting at just 21%, Carter Jensen hit a 367-foot homer to right center that scored Tolbert and made it 3-0. The win probability swung from 21% to 4% on that single swing — a 17-point collapse for the home side. That was the ballgame.
Jensen finished 1-for-5 with the home run, two RBI, and a run scored. Jac Caglianone and Isaac Collins each went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 respectively, giving the Royals a lineup that kept putting the ball in play against Bibee and Cleveland's bullpen. Craig Yoho entered for Cleveland in the seventh and eighth, allowing two hits and two earned runs over two innings. Patrick Bailey went 2-for-3 to lead Cleveland's offense, but it appears the Guardians never found a way to put a crooked number on the board against a Kansas City staff that was simply sharper tonight. The Royals earned this one from the first pitch.
