Luzardo Dominates, Harper and Schwarber Crush Mariners 6-0
Jesus Luzardo threw 7.0 innings of one-hit ball with 9 strikeouts, and Philadelphia's offense did the rest in a 6-0 shutout of Seattle on August 26. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber each went deep, combining for 5 RBI and making Bryan Woo's night a short, painful one.
The story of the night was Luzardo, and it isn't particularly close. One hit, zero earned runs, nine strikeouts over seven innings — that's a performance that suffocates an offense before it ever gets started. He walked three, which is the only blemish worth mentioning, but Seattle never strung anything together against him. Jhoan Duran followed with a clean inning — 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K — to close out the combined shutout. On the other side, Bryan Woo lasted just 4.0 innings, allowing 5 hits and 6 earned runs. Carlos Vargas came on and threw 2.0 scoreless innings, but the damage was already done.
Philadelphia built the lead in two decisive bursts. In the first inning, Harper homered to left center — 388 feet — with Schwarber scoring ahead of him to put the Phillies up 2-0. That swing shifted Seattle's win probability from 42% to 26%, a 16-point collapse in a single at-bat. The game, for all practical purposes, turned right there. In the second inning, Crawford singled to right to score Stott and make it 3-0, and then Schwarber unloaded a 425-foot shot to right center, plating Marsh and Crawford to push the lead to 6-0. Four runs in two innings off Woo, and Seattle never answered.
Bryson Stott went 3-for-4 and scored a run, quietly putting together one of the cleaner offensive nights on the roster. Schwarber finished 2-for-5 with the homer, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Harper was 2-for-4 with the homer and 2 RBI. This looks like a Philadelphia team that is operating with real efficiency — the kind of game where the starting pitcher gives you seven dominant innings and the lineup does exactly enough damage early to make the result feel inevitable by the third inning. Seattle, for its part, appears to have no answers tonight, and Woo's inability to get through four innings will be the number that stings longest from this one.
