Basallo's 411-Foot Bomb Flips the Script, Baltimore Walks Off
Samuel Basallo erased a two-run deficit with one swing — a 411-foot two-run homer to center in the eighth inning that turned a near-certain Tampa Bay win into a Baltimore comeback. The Orioles finished it off two innings later, beating the Rays 3-2 on August 22.
Tampa Bay looked in control for most of the night. Liam Hicks got things started in the second, sending a 388-foot shot to right to put the Rays up 1-0. The lead grew in the sixth when Junior Caminero singled to center, scoring Yandy Díaz and pushing it to 2-0. Shane McClanahan was doing his part on the mound — five innings, four hits, zero earned runs, five strikeouts — and the Rays' bullpen was keeping pace. Tyler Wells threw two scoreless innings after McClanahan departed, and Garrett Cleavinger added 1.1 more without allowing a hit. On paper, Tampa Bay had this game in hand.
Then came the eighth. Basallo stepped in with Baltimore's win probability sitting at just 20% — and left it at 58%. His two-run homer to center, 411 feet, scored Holliday and tied the game at 2-2 in an instant. That's a 39-point swing in win probability on a single swing of the bat, and it was the story of the night. What looked like a quiet Rays road win became a genuine contest, and the momentum — if you believe in such things — had completely shifted to Baltimore's dugout.
Two innings later, the Orioles closed it out. Dylan Beavers doubled to center in the tenth, scoring Taveras to make it 3-2, and that was enough. Brandon Young wasn't sharp — 5.2 innings, six hits, two earned runs, three walks — but Baltimore's offense bailed him out when it mattered. Basallo finished 1-for-1 with the homer, two RBI, and a run scored. Beavers went 1-for-1 with the walk-off RBI. For Tampa Bay, Jonny DeLuca went 2-for-4 and Díaz went 2-for-5, but the Rays' offense went quiet after the sixth and never answered Basallo's blast. The pitching held up; the bats didn't. That's a tough combination to overcome.
