Kirk's Two-Hit Night Sinks New York, Toronto Wins 3-1
Alejandro Kirk went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, and 2 RBI to carry Toronto past New York 3-1 on Friday night. The story of the game was a chaotic sixth inning that flipped the lead — and the game — in a matter of minutes.
For five innings, this looked like a pitchers' duel worth watching. Gerrit Cole and Shane Bieber matched each other pitch for pitch — both going six innings, both allowing exactly 1 earned run, both striking out five. The difference, in the end, came down to one messy inning and one very hot catcher.
Trent Grisham gave New York the lead in the sixth, sending a 359-foot shot to right to make it 1-0. That lead lasted roughly one at-bat. Toronto answered immediately: Guerrero Jr. scored when a throwing error by first baseman García Jr. on a fielder's choice allowed the tying run to cross. Then Kirk stepped in and doubled to left, scoring Springer to put Toronto ahead 2-1. That double was the turning point — Toronto's home win probability swung from 51% to 71% on that single swing of the bat. New York never recovered. In the eighth, Kirk put the game away entirely, going deep to right center at 374 feet for his second extra-base hit of the night, making it 3-1 and ending any realistic conversation about a Yankees comeback.
The pitching story deserves credit too. Cole was sharp — 6.0 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts — but he had no margin for error against Bieber, who was equally efficient (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K). Paul Blackburn came on for New York in relief and held Toronto scoreless over a clean inning, but by then the damage was done. Tyler Rogers handled 1.1 innings for Toronto without allowing a run to close it out. The Yankees got contributions from Grisham (2-for-4, HR, RBI) and had hits from Spencer Jones and Jazz Chisholm Jr., but the offense stalled at one run. Toronto appears to have found its difference-maker on the night in Kirk, whose bat did exactly what New York's couldn't — show up when the game was actually on the line.
