Devers Flips the Script, SF Pulls Away 5-2
Rafael Devers hit a 401-foot home run to center in the first inning that swung San Francisco's win probability from 44% to 65% — and Detroit never recovered. The Giants turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-2 final, with three different players driving in multiple runs.
Detroit drew first blood in the top of the first when a fielder's choice grounder to third scored McGonigle, putting the Tigers up 1-0. That lead lasted roughly one at-bat. Devers stepped in and launched a 401-foot shot to center, scoring Lee and flipping the board to 2-1 San Francisco. That swing — from 44% to 65% in San Francisco's favor — was the hinge the entire game turned on. Detroit's Keider Montero was already in trouble, and the Giants weren't done.
The Tigers answered in the second. McKinstry singled to right to score Torkelson and knot it at 2-2, and for a moment it looked like Montero might settle in. He didn't. Lee singled to center in the bottom half of the second, scoring Basabe and Gilbert to push San Francisco out to a 4-2 lead. That two-run single was the knockout blow — Montero finished the night having allowed 5 earned runs over 6 innings on 5 hits and 3 walks. The stuff was there (5 strikeouts), but the damage was done. Willy Adames added a solo shot to left in the fifth — 367 feet — to make it 5-2 and close the book on any Detroit comeback math.
On the pitching side, the story of the night appears to be the contrast in efficiency. Adrian Houser gave San Francisco 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run with 4 strikeouts — not dominant, but good enough. Sam Hentges followed with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out 2. For Detroit, McGonigle and Torkelson each went 3-for-4 and look like the only Tigers who showed up offensively, but their contributions were stranded in a lineup that couldn't string anything together after the second inning. McKinstry added 2 hits and an RBI, but Detroit's 2-run output against a Giants staff that was far from untouchable says everything about where this offense stands right now.
