Luzardo Dominates, Phillies Blank Washington 5-0
Jesus Luzardo threw 8.0 innings of four-hit, zero-run ball with 7 strikeouts, and Philadelphia's offense did the rest early. The Phillies needed just three innings to build a 4-0 lead they never came close to surrendering.
The story of the night was Luzardo, and it wasn't particularly close. Eight innings, four hits, two walks, seven strikeouts, zero earned runs — that's a performance that takes the ball out of the bullpen's hands and lets a team breathe. Washington's lineup, with CJ Abrams going 2-for-4 as its lone bright spot, couldn't string anything together against him. Luzardo appears to be pitching as well as anyone in Philadelphia's rotation right now, and Tuesday's outing looked like a statement.
Philadelphia got to Zack Littell early and often. In the first inning, Luis Arraez singled to center to score Trea Turner, and just like that it was 1-0. The Phillies came back in the third and broke the game open: Arraez doubled to right to score Turner again, pushing it to 2-0, and that's when the win probability swung from 86% to 93% — a 7-point jump that effectively ended the competitive portion of the evening. Alec Bohm followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Harper and make it 3-0, then Brandon Marsh doubled to right to score Arraez for 4-0. Littell finished with 6.2 innings pitched, 7 hits, and 4 earned runs allowed. Turner went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Arraez was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run. The Phillies spread the damage around, which looks like a sign of an offense that's clicking rather than leaning on one bat.
Philadelphia added its fifth run in the seventh when Turner singled to right to score Justin Crawford, who had gone 2-for-4 on the night. Caleb Kilian closed it out with a clean ninth — 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 strikeouts in 1.0 inning. Washington's Trevor Williams was sharp in relief (1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 K), but the game was long gone by then. Final: Philadelphia 5, Washington 0. The Phillies got exactly what they needed — a dominant starting pitching performance, a decisive early offensive burst, and a stress-free finish.
